Atkins has introduced a comprehensive series of training courses which cover a
wide spectrum of brownfield issues ranging from site investigation, through risk
assessment to remediation and waste management, drawing on Atkins extensive experience
in these disciplines. Held at venues nationwide, a number of the courses build
on the successful web-based tools CAT-WASTESOIL (www.catwastesoil.co.uk)
and ATRISKSOIL (www.atrisksoil.co.uk). A number of these courses have
been run successfully in the past, attracting very positive feedback from delegates.
The courses are open to all, with Local Authorities being eligible for reduced rates.
Details on all of the courses, dates, venues and prices can be found here .
Course details, dates and booking forms can be found at www.atkinsglobal.com/skills/environmentalservices/training/contaminatedlandtraining/.

| As part of the recent RISC model runs beryllium and vanadium have been added to the ATRISKSOIL database. |
|
| Three non-standard land-uses have been added to ATRISKSOIL. These are parks, playing fields and open spaces. Each has a distinct conceptual site model which must be matched to site circumstances before applying the values in a decision-making context. Details of inputs, with justification, are available to subscribers. |

| The dermal contact pathway approach has been updated for the SSVs. This is following clarification of the UK dermal approach within CLEA Briefing Note 1. The updated approach uses the upper 95th percentile values for fraction of exposed skin, in turn calculated from estimating two thirds of the maximum exposed skin fraction (as presented in the CLEA Briefing Note). The previous approach applied within the SSVs was more conservative and assumed that all exposed skin was soiled. |

Atkins announced at International Clean Up 2006 that their ATRISKSOIL screening values (SSVs) for assessing the potential for human health risks to be present as a result of land contamination are now being made available to the wider environmental sector.
These generic assessment criteria were first introduced two years ago and were previously only available to Local Authorities and research institutions and it is anticipated that the extended roll out should contribute to greater consistency in land quality assessment across the brownfield sector.
The Atkins SSVs have been derived consistent with the principles contained within Contaminated Land Reports 7 through to 10 and the associated CLEA Briefing Notes, with the entire process subject to a rigorous QA/QC exercise. Atkins is also adding three new landuse scenarios to the existing product, namely; parks, playing fields and open spaces, the addition of which will significantly broaden the scope of the assessors’ toolkit.
Currently SSVs are available for more than 40 contaminants, including BTEX constituents, priority PAH species, carbon banded TPH, chlorinated solvents and a wide range of metals and metalloids. A programme to derive values for additional contaminants is ongoing and requests from subscribers are welcomed.
The first year’s subscription for private sector clients will be combined with a one-day comprehensive training course to provide critical background information on the derivation process underpinning the screening values and their appropriate application. |

Defra and the Environment Agency have, this week, released an SGV for phenol. This being the case,
the screening values included in the ATRISKSOIL database should no longer be used.
The database has been modified to remove these from the SSV table. |

14 September 2005, EPSOM
Atkins is pleased to announce a one-day interactive training course on Controlled Waters Risk Assessment, specifically designed for local authorities. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches to risk assessment will be covered ensuring that the attendee recognises important sources, pathways and receptors to consider in a variety of conceptual site models, especially since controlled water is often considered to be a crucial contaminant migration pathway for human health risk exposure.
Course Information: Further details on the course, along with a booking form, can be found here

| 11th and 12th July, WARRINGTON
Atkins is pleased to offer a 2-day training course on the requirements for, application and review of detailed quantitative human health risk assessments (DQRA) for contaminated land. The course is being run in both Epsom and Warrington. It is designed for environmental professionals, particularly Local Authority regulators, who commission, design, undertake and especially review human health risk assessments.

| Following the publication of TOX reports for Carbon Tetrachloride and 1,2 Dichloroethane (TOX Reports 21 and 22 respectively), these contaminants have been run through the RISC model and have been added to the ATRISKSOIL database. |
|
| Following the publication of the TOX report for Trichloroethylene, the ATRISKSOIL values have been updated to incorporate the Index Dose published in the TOX Report. |
|
| Following the publication of the TOX report for Xylene, the ATRISKSOIL values have been updated to incorporate the TDI and MDI data published in this TOX Report. |
|
| Defra and the Environment Agency have, this week, released SGVs for toluene and ethylbenzene. This being the case, the screening values included in the ATRISKSOIL database should no longer be used. The database has been modified to remove these from the SSV table. |
|
| Following the publication of TOX reports for these chlorinated organic compounds these contaminants have been run through the RISC model and will shortly be added to the ATRISKSOIL database. |
|
| The ATRISKSOIL values for these three organic contaminants have been updated following the incorporation of the TDI and MDI
(or, in the case of Vinyl Chloride, Index Dose) data published in the relevant TOX reports. |
|
| Earlier this summer the EA released three Briefing Notes dealing with revisions to CLR10.
These covered the physical properties of UK building stock, modelling of vapour intrusion to buildings (using the Johnson and Ettinger model) and dermal uptake.
The notes outlined changes which will be made to the next version of CLEA.
The findings and recommendations of these briefing notes have been incorporated into the RISC model used to derive the ATRISKSOIL values.
As a consequence, many of the values have been updated on the website. |
|
| Until 31st March 2004 a year's subscription to the ATRISKSOIL database is available
for £195+VAT (usual price £250+VAT). Click here for more details. |
