Release of updates to the CLEA Framework18 September 2009
Following on from our earlier bulletin regarding the release of SGVs for Dioxins, the Environment Agency has released several updates in relation to the CLEA Framework today. These comprise the following:
    · CLEA v1.05 software
    · CLEA v1.05 handbook
    · Dioxin, Furans and Dioxin-like PCB – SGV Report, TOX Report and Supplementary Note.
    · Dioxin worksheets
    · CLEA Bulletin
    · CLEA Framework Errata

We are currently assessing the impacts of the CLEA v1.05 software and handbook. We currently anticipate this will result in only re-running the SSVs for the contaminants which are impacted by these changes. We further anticipate this will mean the contaminants which are not impacted will not be rerun using CLEA v1.05, and the SSVs derived using CLEA v1.04 will remain.

Updates regarding this will be detailed on the ATRISKsoil website.

For further information please see the Environment Agency website.
Release of new SGVs for Dioxins by the Environment Agency18 September 2009
Following the release of the SGVs for Dioxin by the Environment Agency today, subscribers should note that these SGVs replace the ATRISKsoil SSVs which have been published on the subscriber area of the website.

ATRISKsoil SSVs for a SOM of 1% and sand soil type1st July 2009
Atkins are currently undertaking modelling to derive ATRISKsoil SSVs for SOM of 1% and a sand soil type. It is thought that this lower SOM and a sand soil type are more appropriate to sites on which we have worked, and from comments we have received from subscribers.

Atkins have previously released SSVs using the Environment Agency guidance (SR2, SR3, SR4 and SR7) by using a SOM of 6% and a sandy loam soil. This set of SSVs are also in line with the SGVs which have been and are being released. All SSVs for standard land uses are supersceded by any SGV released by the Environment Agency and the SSVs for non-standard landuses are updated to be consistent with the SGV physical-chemcial and toxicological parameters.
Update - Input parameters for CLEA v1.04 added to the ATRISKsoil website
Following the release of ATRISKsoil SSVs derived using the updated January 2009 guidance and CLEA v1.04 software, the input parameters are now available on the website to subscribers. In addition, the SSVs for parks have been updated for the heavy TPH fractions. The values presented for these fractions represent the CLEA-derived health-based value.
Release of additional SGV contaminants - Arsenic and Nickel 12 May 2009
Following the release of additional SGVs for Arsenic and Nickel by the Environment Agency today, subscribers should note that the SGVs replace the SSVs which have been published on the subscriber area of the website.

The SSVs for land uses without a SGV, will be updated in the near future to include the information included within the SGV reports for these chemicals.

Release of new ATRISKsoil SSVs based on CLEA v1.04 software and associated guidance! March 2009
Atkins have updated the ATRISKsoil SSVs for the commercial/industrial, residential with plant uptake, residential without plant uptake and allotment land uses for over 50 contaminants.

These reflect the new final guidance published by Defra and the Environment Agency (SC050021/SR3 Final (the CLEA Report) and SC050021/SR2 Final (the TOX report)) in January 2009 and now replace the previous ATRISKsoil SSVs. These updated ATRISKsoil SSVs are based on a soil organic matter of 6% in line with the Defra and Environment Agency guidance.

The new ATRISKsoil SSVs have been derived using CLEA v1.04. We are currently in the process of completing the individual contaminant toxicology reports for each substance. Once the documentation has been fully QA'd, they will be put on the website to download. Currently, all downloadable files (including input parameters), have not been replaced and therefore reflect the old guidance. We hope to have these available as soon as possible.

The SSVs currently on the website for parks, playing fields and open spaces land uses are based on the old guidance (CLR7-10 and RISC workbench) and should be used with caution.

ATRISKsoil SSVs for parks and open spaces will be released on the website this week (week of the 30th of March). The ATRISKsoil SSVs for playing fields are in the process of being derived and the website will be updated as soon as they are ready.

Please check back for any further updates.

ATRISKsoil SSVs for selected substances supersceded by Environment Agency SGVs

Today (31/03/2009), the Environment Agency (EA) published TOX and SGV reports for the following substances: Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylenes, Selenium and Mercury (http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/research/planning/64015.aspx). These SGVs will replace the ATRISKsoil SSVs for standard land uses for these substances. Therefore, please ensure you use the SGVs for these substances when carrying out generic standard land use screening. We will update the toxicological data for these substances and rerun the SSVs for non-standard land uses (parks, playing fields and open spaces) to be consistent with the toxicological data used by the EA.
Updates to ATRISKSOIL values- Environment Agency Release New CLEA Software (v1.04) and Guidance29th January 2009
Following the release of CLEA v1.04, Atkins is in the process of updating the ATRISKSOIL SSVs using this software. The revised figures and supporting information will also be updated to be fully compliant with the most current UK guidance. Updated ATRISKSOIL SSV values and supporting information should be available for selected land uses by the end of March.

The ATRISKSOIL SSVs for commercial/industrial, residential with and without plant uptake receptors currently on the website have been derived using CLEA v1.03. The ATRISKSOIL SSVs for parks, playing fields, open spaces numbers currently on the website are based on the old guidance. The values available on the website prior to the release of updated numbers should therefore be used with caution.
Release of new ATRISKsoil SSVs!November 2008
Atkins have updated the ATRISKsoil SSVs for the commercial/industrial, residential with plant uptake and residential without plant uptake land uses for over 50 contaminants.

These reflect the new guidance published by Defra and the Environment Agency (SC050021/SR3 (the CLEA Report) and SC050021/SR2 (the TOX report)) in 2008 and now replace the previous ATRISKsoil SSVs. The first set released are based on a soil organic matter of 2.5%. ATRISKsoil SSVs based on a soil organic matter of 1% have been derived and will be uploaded to the website shortly.

The new ATRISKsoil SSVs have been derived using CLEA v1.03. We are currently in the process of completing the individual contaminant toxicology report for each substance. Once the documentation has been fully QA'd, they will be put on the website to download. Currently, all downloadable files (including input parameters), have not been replaced and therefore reflect the old guidance. We hope to have these available as soon as possible.

The ATRISKsoil SSVs for parks, playing fields, open spaces and allotments are planned for release in the new year. The numbers currently on the website for these land uses are based on the old guidance and should be used with caution.

Beryllium and Vanadium Added to the ATRISKSOIL SuiteJuly 2006
As part of the recent RISC model runs beryllium and vanadium have been added to the ATRISKSOIL database.
Non-Standard Land-Uses Added to the ATRISKSOIL ServiceJuly 2006
Three non-standard land-uses have been added to ATRISKSOIL. These are parks, playing fields and open spaces. Each has a distinct conceptual site model which must be matched to site circumstances before applying the values in a decision-making context. Details of inputs, with justification, are available to subscribers.
    Dermal Approach UpdatedJuly 2006
The dermal contact pathway approach has been updated for the SSVs. This is following clarification of the UK dermal approach within CLEA Briefing Note 1. The updated approach uses the upper 95th percentile values for fraction of exposed skin, in turn calculated from estimating two thirds of the maximum exposed skin fraction (as presented in the CLEA Briefing Note). The previous approach applied within the SSVs was more conservative and assumed that all exposed skin was soiled.
    ATRISKSOIL - Access WidenedJune 2006

Atkins announced at International Clean Up 2006 that their ATRISKSOIL screening values (SSVs) for assessing the potential for human health risks to be present as a result of land contamination are now being made available to the wider environmental sector.

These generic assessment criteria were first introduced two years ago and were previously only available to Local Authorities and research institutions and it is anticipated that the extended roll out should contribute to greater consistency in land quality assessment across the brownfield sector.

The Atkins SSVs have been derived consistent with the principles contained within Contaminated Land Reports 7 through to 10 and the associated CLEA Briefing Notes, with the entire process subject to a rigorous QA/QC exercise. Atkins is also adding three new landuse scenarios to the existing product, namely; parks, playing fields and open spaces, the addition of which will significantly broaden the scope of the assessors’ toolkit.

Currently SSVs are available for more than 40 contaminants, including BTEX constituents, priority PAH species, carbon banded TPH, chlorinated solvents and a wide range of metals and metalloids. A programme to derive values for additional contaminants is ongoing and requests from subscribers are welcomed.

The first year’s subscription for private sector clients will be combined with a one-day comprehensive training course to provide critical background information on the derivation process underpinning the screening values and their appropriate application.
